Gold rush dreams - Guide school story, Reto. Guide horse, foundation of my knowledge about the wilderness.

Gold rush dreams - Guide school story, Reto, Guide horse, foundation of my knowledge about the wilderness

My name is Reto from Switzerland and I am 38 years old. 15 years ago I worked as a log home builder for one year in British Columbia. It was a very nice experience. Since this time, I came back twice to explore the wilderness and be out in nature. After this, I was dreaming about travelling on a horse, like in the time of the Gold Rush. So, I found the perfect place for doing that; Chilcotin Holidays.

The first week I was a member of the wilderness guide school. I learned about riding, shoeing the horses, packing the horses, riding up in the mountains, camping, cooking for guests, and lots more. For sure one of the best experiences of my life. I decided to stay two more weeks on the ranch to see what kind of work there is to do all around. I got to see the guide horse foundation learning in action, by watching them training to carry their riders high into the mountains. Together with volunteers from all over the world I helped build on the ranch, maintain trucks, work at a log cabin, scout for wild game, and even assist with guides. There was always time for horse back riding. I learned how to be more patient and how it is to work in the back country without all the special tools right beside me. The time ran out fast and soon I was back home to work as a carpenter in my small company. I will tell all my friends about this special experience. Perhaps I can come back together with some friends for a horse back trip, that would be perfect. Thanks to Kevin and Leandra and all the members of this big family.
