Finding the right saddle

Before the first ride, everyone at the ranch gets a riding orientation. This orientation shows you how to fit your saddle on the horse, how to saddle your horse, how to put on the crooper, the breast collar and the bridle, and also how to ride in the mountains. But before all of that we first need to fit the saddle to the rider. Because we ride for a long time and also because it would be too difficult to fit a saddle on the horse and then the person on the saddle, we do it the other way. We first fit the rider to the saddle and then the saddle on the horse.

Sometimes it can take some time to find the perfect saddle that fits you. To measure if the saddle fits you, you have to place the saddle on a wooden horse and then sit on it. Between your quadriceps and the front part of the saddle you should have a space around two fingers wide. Then you also try to stand up on your stirrups and feel if you are comfortable in the saddle.

The size of the saddle I use is the average size and it is the perfect size for most people too. So you have to share and also find a plan B in case you go riding with someone that uses the same saddle as you. Even if it won’t be as perfect, you can always find another saddle that will suit you.

After finding your perfect saddle you need to fit it on your horse. The first step is to put the saddle on the horse and check if it is too low on the withers or if it does not touch and press on the whole back. If needed, we would add a cheater on the blanket to put the saddle higher or a rocker to even the pressure of the saddle on the horse’s back. Now your saddle fits you perfectly and also your horse and you are ready to go for a ride.
