Chilcotin Holidays

A Wilderness Trail Trip

Back home, around the sunny shores of the West Coast of Australia, the country side beckons its inhabitants to heed the call for outdoor adventure, and we gladly answer it. It is often the case that multitudes of people will leave the cities over the weekend to escape into the country side for a bit of rest and recreation. It seems this is an idea that has encapsulated the world and by no means excludes Canadian ranch's in the middle of no where.

At Chilcotin Holidays Guest Ranch, trips out of the ranch are a regular occurrence, it can even be said that it is a way of life. So how would a trip from the city to country side differ from wilderness to, well, more wilderness? Where do I begin!?

The city folk begin by loading their cars with all there possessions as if they were relocating. At the ranch we carefully calculate what we need and pack it into pack boxes to put on our horses. Oh, our vehicles, by the way, are Cayuse Mountain Horses which are nature's solution to 4wd's. Instead of filling the tank with gas and the tires with air we make sure our horses are well fed with horse delicacies and that all 4 horse shoes are on the hoof's of the horse (these are expertly fixed by all our guides who have training in this skill!)

Back to the city. Once the car is packed you head for the highway where you face traffic congestion and impatient drivers, all who are fighting for a proverbial podium on the road. At the ranch, we simply hop on our horses and head to the trail leading us to an abundance of space. We also don't have to roll the windows down in the car if it get's too hot or blast the music from the stereo if too bored. A top our horses we have the fresh South Chilcotin wind licking at our faces, engaging our senses to a higher level of experience. Forget the blasting tunes of stereo's as well! The melodic tunes of the environment are a constant source of tranquility and serenity, complimenting the green canvas of the beautiful alpine forest.

After the long drive out of the city, you finally reach your destination, tired and exhausted. You scramble out the car and you sprint to the nearest washroom because your bladder is beyond maximum capacity. Meanwhile, the kids are causing a ruckus and the dog is chasing a strange marsupial he's found in the bush. Lovely. Meanwhile back at the ranch, or should I say back at the campsite you have arrived after conquering mountainous terrain and torrential rivers. Everyone is unsaddling their horses, taking in the heavenly views whilst a delicious meal is being prepared on a rustic campfire. Not bad after a day on the horse!

A part of me really enjoys the adventures back home by car and the unsuspecting events that might follow during that trip; it is all beautiful to me. Going on a trip in the wilderness, however, is a totally unrivalled experience. I would say going on a trip in the Canadian wilderness is hard work, even more work than people would expect, but the reward of pristine Canadian wilderness exposure is worth ten times the work you do. If at the end of the day you can sit back, take in your surroundings and feel a wave of relaxation come over you, I would say definitely, that you are in the right place!
