Chilcotin Holidays

Carl the Cabin Builder

What is the quintessential Canadian? Is it the flannel wearing lumberjack? The screaming ice-hockey fan? Or the gunslinging, lasso wielding Cowboy? I've met many people in my travels to Canada so far, none of them quite mirroring the stereotypical image that most people associate with a true Canadian.

But if you are talking about someone who embodies the spirit of what it means to be Canadian - hard working, friendly, a true wildlife enthusiast and a real lumberjack then it's hard to go past Carl.

Amongst his many other skills, Carl is a talented carpenter and can turn his hand to almost any task, be it repairing a log fence, flooring an entire house or building a cabin in the remote wilderness. For the last 15 years, Carl has worked with the staff at Chilcotin Holidays helping to literally build the Ranch into what it is today.

I was lucky enough to work alongside Carl recently as he built a brand new wooden cabin at our remote Eldorado camp. To see an 86 year old man, ride on horseback for 6 hours through the Chilcotin Mountains is nothing short of amazing. We rode along steep shale cliffs, through beautiful meadows and across ridge tops, to our basic camp and surveyed the site of our build.

Carl was up at day break with the rest of the crew, making jokes around the fire as we drank our morning tea and contemplated the hand drawn sketches of the cabin blue prints. I often marvelled at Carl's patience, and determinedness as we went through the highs and lows of building the cabin from scratch. Without a doubt, Carl was by far the most experienced carpenter we had within our team and the way he guided the younger members of the group through each of the stages of the build ensured that each of us came out of the five days with a wealth of knowledge and expertise.

It is truly remarkable what we were able to accomplish in the mountains with Carl's help. As we stood back on our final day and admired the finished cabin, I know each of us were amazed at what we had achieved as a team, and were grateful to have had such inspirational leader to share the experience with.
