Chilcotin Holidays

Why I extended my stay?

I am an anthropology student in Scotland and this year I decided to take a break from my studies. I felt like I was in a bubble at uni, protected and unaware of life opportunities that could be experienced around the world. This is why I decided to take a gap year, I wanted to grow and experience new things, figuring out who I was and where I was going! My mind was set on Canada, especially Chilcotin Holidays: horses, the wilderness, mountains, what else could I want!

Things however, never work the way we expect them to, it wouldn’t be fun if not! I applied as an intern and wasn’t to sure what to expect. The day I arrived I was overwhelmed by everything, especially after the first two days I thought I would not be able to make it until the end of my stay, which was 8 weeks. I was not used to the settings and the way everything was structured. With university, life and work I was used to always having someone be my boss or structured in a way where I was told what to do and the job had to be done. The Ranch was different, it required that you took control of your own life; you are the boss! Of course there are rules to follow along with the procedures. The Ranch offers so many opportunities and lifetime experiences but it is up to you to take the initiative and take those opportunities. Life doesn't wait and will continue with or without you! But I didn’t give up and I started implementing my new lifestyle. Little by little, I became more independent, confident, I wrote down my goals and purposes and started my monthly planner. I was starting to think for myself and not what others expected me to be. At that moment I realized 8 weeks would never be enough for what I wanted to achieve here, I needed to stay longer! So I decided to stay on and continue the adventure!

Something very important that also helped me and that I personally think is essential, is the atmosphere. Among all my new experiences I also met incredible people. Living at the ranch is just like home, everyone has a positive, friendly and outgoing attitude.

I learned here that weaknesses are not something bad but something to work on, failures are what make you grow and opportunities will not wait for you! Most importantly I learned that life is a long ongoing learning process! I have noticed the changes in myself, I came here to figure things out and I did, and still am. I have built confidence, I have taken risks when I know it will be worth it and taken initiative. I have decided to live my life for myself and not others and make myself the most important person in my life!
