Chilcotin Holidays

A Vision for the Future

The Cariboo-Chilcotin Coast is a gift; succinctly put by Chris Harris. I have also found this to be a logically sound statement as I continued to wander deeper into the Chilcotin wild. It has indeed been a gift, one which I couldn't repay. To have had the opportunity to guide people into this fantastic wonderland is amazing. If only I could've gone deeper in, like Chris Harris, and seen what he had seen. To be mesmerized at what he was mesmerized by. In some way, I can do that. His pictures inspire that want that he has, to go deeper and to revel in pure wilderness.

If this is the feeling I get from looking at pictures, then I would say Chris Harris has accomplished his goals. He simply has done what he said he wanted to do; tell a story through photographs. Through this he also challenges us with this simple question: what is our responsibility? A sombre, humbling and thought provoking question. The answer, however, is simple yet ever changing.

For Chris, as he was going through his journey, he must have realized that he was obligated to tell a story. And his story is that the Chilcotin's spirit is alive and well and intact. His photography proves that. Every picture is an accurate representation of the land he has traversed. He has not endeavored to capture destruction or degradation and I applaud him for that. Through this, whether realized or not, he has quite possibly sparked action in all who read his book. What that action is may still be yet determined, but it is action nonetheless.

Maybe this was his vision from the start. What he has told is a story. This story is about an Ark. It is about a home. It is about a special place. Above all, it is about the future of this place. And that's the link between it all, not that we are dwelling on the past or present, but are reaching into the future and maybe that's why he wrote this story; for the future. And The future for the Cariboo-Chilcotin Coast does look that ever so brighter.

“There are things in your life that only you will see, stories that only you will hear. If you don't tell them or write them down, if you don't make the picture, these things will not be seen, these things will not be heard.”
