Chilcotin Holidays

Safety is my PAL

In North America, I have found that every man and his dog has a firearm. This statement may be exaggerated, but in some places it is quite close to the truth. My own experience with firearms is very limited, but I have shot one. So when coming to a place where the ownership of a firearm is very liberal, I was surprised, yet intrigued.

I understand in some places a firearm maybe necessary. Chilcotin Holiday's would be this place. The primary use of a firearm at the ranch is for safety in the wilderness. As much as bear spray and bear bangers can help, the fact is, that there is only one thing that can stop an enraged bear.

When I was thinking about becoming a guide and the possible qualifications I would need to be an effective guide, there was no looking pass the Possession Acquisition License or the PAL. The PAL is essentially training on how to operate a firearm safely and securely in multiple environments involving many different situations.

The course goes through the history of firearms, types of firearms and ammunition, the legality of operating a firearm safely and the practice of many situations that we may face once we are in possession of a firearm. Overall, you have a theory side which is backed with a practical component. The perfect way to learn firearm safety.

The course is thorough. It goes through a lot of content in a short amount of time, but also leaves ample time to practice what you learnt in a practical setting. It prepares you very well for the end of course examination you have to do in order to complete the course. With the teaching I received, I successfully passed my examination with flying colors ensuring that I have an important qualification which facilitates the safety of my guests on pack trips.

My overall experience was a positive one. I was very happy with everything I learnt and understood the value it had. I can now say I am much more comfortable with the operation of firearms and am even more comfortable with keeping my guests safe if I'm ever in needing to protect them from dangerous wildlife. The guest's experience is directly correlated with how safe they feel and if they know that there guide is capable of protecting them, they are going to be enjoying the trip much more.
