Chilcotin Holidays

The Chilcotin Ark

When I first entered the South Chilcotin Mountain Park, I was in awe of everything that my eyes saw. A myriad of habitats and ecosystems stood before me, each as different and important as the next. This experience of pure untouched wilderness will forever be a part of my most fondest memories. This small part of the Cariboo- Chilcotin region, only scrapes the tip of the iceberg however.

The mountain park sits in the southern region of what is called the Chilcotin Ark by Dave Neads in Chris Harris's photography book about the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast. How my appreciation of my first experience seeing the South Chilcotin Moutanin Park would've changed if I read this passage by Dave Neads first.

The Chilcotin Ark is exactly it's namesake. It's an Ark, an ecological sanctuary containing an immense amount of biodiversity, an environment which opposes the human effort to commercialize nature and a reminder of what our earth should be like.

The Ark covers 2.5 million hectares, larger than Belgium. Within it's boundaries, it contains 10 geoclimatic zones four different geological formations including B.C's highest peaks, dormant volcano's, lava plateaus and rift valleys with lakes up to a 100km's long. It is the northern hemisphere's most diverse temperate region, untouched by commercialism and remaining as it was before human settlement. The area includes 4 major river systems which nourish the numerous basins in the Ark. These rivers themselves are fed by some of the most abundant glacial run-offs in the world. These waters produce a vital necessity to all living things; one of those being the famous salmon run.

The area that Chilcotin Holiday's operates in is very important. It is part of the last standing natural wilderness areas in the world. How we operate in it, how we talk about it, how we act towards it is then an impotant question we must ask ourselves. Wilderness Operators such as Chilcotin Holiday's are stewards of the land. We are at the forefront of conservation and stewardship. We therefore must act accordingly to preserve one of the worlds greatest gifts to us, and what a privilege that is.
