Chilcotin Holidays

The Wilderness Stewardship Foundation

My initial intention in coming to the ranch was to work for and learn from the activities of the WSF. Although my stay ended up consisting of far more and varied pursuits, some of the greatest enjoyment and experience that I have gained from my time here has been my involvement with this incredible foundation.

The most striking difference that I have experienced working for WSF as opposed to the charities I have engaged with before, is that all of the fantastic and necessary work that we are doing directly impacts the environment and land that we are living as a part of. Researching into the projects that past interns have devoted months to accomplish, and being able to observe the positive consequences of that work in the environment directly surrounding me is an impassioning and humbling reality that I have not experienced before. The drive and motivation that this provides is unequalled.

The biggest lesson that being a part of the WSF has taught me is that there is never ‘nothing you can do’. Indeed, the saying that a small group of motivated people can change the world has never held more true to me, nor had such a cast-iron example provided for it, than witnessing and engaging in the work of the WSF. Using knowledge gleaned over years of observing and coming to understand the environment, the WSF alone has made a hugely positive impact on the local ecology, and furthermore has encouraged a huge response from others who have taken up the mantle of being a steward of the land.

Like small stones starting an avalanche, the work of countless interns, volunteers, and the directors have ensured that one small foundation has created a trend of wilderness stewardship that should ensure that the Bridge River Valley ecology and environment not only survives, but thrives well into the future. And I hope that my contribution can help this beautiful land continue to flourish.
