Swimming in strange waters - Personal Growth at Chilcotin Holidays

I never thought I'd end up here. 23 years old, recently graduated from university and now living on a ranch. I wanted a change from my daily routine and I knew I always wanted to explore more of Canada. As a Canadian with roots on the East coast, I never had ventured West of Ontario.

After leaving university I felt a bit stuck; working a job that gave me no fufillment, in a place that I had gotten used to.

Being here, at Chilcotin Holidays, has given me a new perspective on the way I view and handle situations. Before arriving here, I used to think days were short. If I did not think I'd be able to do something I'd just let another person do it, telling myself i'd learn eventually. Being here is like being scared of the water, not that you don't know how to swim, but always letting the uncertainty of the depth and of your abilities stopping you from going in. Here, you are pushed off into the deep end.

For the first couple of weeks I was constantly doubting myself. I was nervous around the horses, I was overwhelmed in the kitchen and I wasn't strong enough to move the sprinklers around. Don't even get me started on those sprinklers. Five weeks later im still uncertain about my ability to do things, but now i'm not hesitant to try.

“Survial is the ability to swim in strange water”. This place has taught me to swim in strange water. Coming to a place I have never been, with people I do not know and doing activities I have never done has made me grow as a person.
